In January 1999, some friends and I started working on a project for home that involves playing MP3s through ethernet to a dedicated embedded device. With a little work and some motivation, ``Cantante'' is the result of things.

It's now two years later and we really think the MP3 thing hasn't died out, but may be headed for a lot more popularity. We have started a redesign of the Cantante hardware for more widespread use and want to make the hardware and software Open Source. If you have any comments (good or bad), please email us back. We want to get as much feedback as soon as possible. We would like to have a first run of hardware available to testers within 3 months. This page contains our ideas.

The end goal of this project is to have a versatile Internet appliance capable of encoding and decoding a variety of audio formats and streaming those formats in real-time. The software will be Open Source under the GPL software license. All hardware schematics will be available for improvement and redesign.

Well... Unfortunately, Cirrus hasn't been very responsive about getting us some datasheets and they haven't released any more information yet, so we're kind of in the dark right now. I've had lots of requests for updates on this project, but, unfortunately, I can't provide any right now.
